Locating Numbers

Placing numbers on a number line helps us understand their magnitude relative to one another.

Example Sequence

Consider the numbers: 2180,2754,1500,3600,9950,9590,1050,3050,5030,5300,84002180, 2754, 1500, 3600, 9950, 9590, 1050, 3050, 5030, 5300, 8400.

When drawing a number line from 10001000 to 10,00010,000, we look for benchmarks (like multiples of 1000).

Finding Patterns

Look at the jumps between numbers.

  • Sequence A: 2010,2020,2010, 2020, \dots (Jump of 10)
  • Sequence B: 9996,9997,9996, 9997, \dots (Jump of 1)
  • Sequence C: 15077,15078,15077, 15078, \dots (Jump of 1)
  • Sequence D: 86705,87705,86705, 87705, \dots (Jump of 1000)
Tip

Key Skill: Always check the difference between consecutive marks on a number line to determine the “scale” or “interval”.
