The Integer Number Line

From Ray to Line

Previously, we visualized numbers on a ray starting at 0 and going right. Now, we extend the line to the left to include negative numbers.

• Right of 0: Positive Integers (Forward direction).
• Left of 0: Negative Integers (Backward direction).

Comparing Integers

On the number line:

• Numbers to the Right are Larger.
• Numbers to the Left are Smaller.

Examples

1. $+4$ vs $+1$: $+4$ is to the right of $+1$, so $+4 > +1$.
2. $-1$ vs $-4$: $-1$ is to the right of $-4$, so $-1 > -4$.
3. $-5$ vs $0$: Any negative number is to the left of 0, so $-5 < 0$.
