From Ray to Line

Previously, we visualized numbers on a ray starting at 0 and going right. Now, we extend the line to the left to include negative numbers.

01234-1-2-3-4
  • Right of 0: Positive Integers (Forward direction).
  • Left of 0: Negative Integers (Backward direction).

Comparing Integers

On the number line:

  • Numbers to the Right are Larger.
  • Numbers to the Left are Smaller.

Examples

  1. +4+4 vs +1+1: +4+4 is to the right of +1+1, so +4>+1+4 > +1.
  2. 1-1 vs 4-4: 1-1 is to the right of 4-4, so 1>4-1 > -4.
  3. 5-5 vs 00: Any negative number is to the left of 0, so 5<0-5 < 0.
Warning

Common Mistake: Do not ignore the sign! While 100100 is bigger than 11, 100-100 is much smaller than 1-1. Imagine debt: owing ₹100 is worse (less money) than owing ₹1.
